Subject: OPPOSE ACR 94 Oppose Boy Scout Discrimination

Dear Assembly Member,

I urge you, in the strongest terms, to vote against ACR 94 when it comes before you in the Assembly Judiciary Committee on May 8.

This measure would congratulate the Boy Scouts of America on its 102nd anniversary, and acknowledge and recognize its accomplishments and the positive effect that it has had on the lives of youth.

You may say this is a no brainer, Why shouldn't we congratulate the Boy Scouts for the work they have done over the years?

Yet, contrary to the wording of the resolution, the policies of the Boy Scouts has had a very detrimental effect on the lives of many youth.

For years the Boy Scouts have had a policy of discriminating against gay men who wish to serve as scout masters. In essence the Scouts say "No gays need apply". This has a very detrimental effect on gay youth who are becoming aware of their sexual orientation. All to often society says it is right to discriminate against gay people. All to often it also hammers home the message that being gay is immoral.

This can have a devastating impact on the mental health of these gay youth. It contributes to the significantly higher suicide rate among gay teens than among teens in general.

Even members of Congress recognize the damaging effect of the Boy Scout policy. On February 1, 2010, 26 Members of Congress, in a letter sent to the Chief Scout Executive of the organization, urged the Boy Scouts of America to end its discriminatory policy of not accepting gays and lesbians.

In their letter they said, "Regrettably, the current, discriminatory policy of the Boy Scouts of America has denied opportunities for young scouts, community-oriented citizens, and loving parents". They added that, "as you celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Boy Scouts of America, it is long past time that the Boy Scouts finally provide the opportunity for all Scouts, Leaders, and volunteers, to share in the joys of Scouting, regardless of sexual orientation."

I think this is the message that YOU should be sending to the Boy Scouts. There will be time enough to congratulate them when, and if, they end their discriminatory practices.

Please vote No on ACR 94.

Sincerely,
