Subject: Support AB 1501 Help Students Pay College Tuition
Dear Senator,
I urge you to vote for AB 1501 when it comes before you in the Senate Education Committee on June 27.
AB 1501 would establish a middle class scholarship program for students attending the University of California (UC) or California State University (CSU). Students, with family income of up to $150,000, would qualify for these scholarships as long as they are residents of the state, or are exempt from paying non resident tuition, and if they submit the necessary documentation on time.
You may well ask why do middle class students with family income up to $150,000 need scholarships. If you have looked at the tuition rates lately, you will know why. The UC web site estimates that one year at that institution costs between $28,400 and $31,200, depending on whether you live on or off campus.
The CSU site says costs for a year of education at their schools ranges between $15,897 and $22,972 for fees, text books, supplies, food, and housing.
Expenses like that put an immense burden on even middle class families. Often the students must take out huge loans to cover the cost of their education. According to a report in the New York Times, for all borrowers, the average debt upon graduation, in 2011 was $23,300, with 10 percent owing more than $54,000 and 3 percent more than $100,000, This means it often takes decades for students to pay off their debt, and the huge costs in interest on that debt.
Even President Obama says it took him 13 years to pay off his college debt.
If California is too maintain its dominant place in the national and world economies, it must have a steady stream of new college graduates. AB 1501 will reduce the cost of a college education and so help maintain that steady stream of graduates. Please vote for AB 1501.
