Subject: Support AB 1505 Help LGBT Veterans

Dear Senator,

Please vote for AB 1505 when it comes before you in the Senate Veterans Affairs Committee on June 12.

This bill seeks to ensure California veterans, dishonorably discharged from the US military simply because of their sexual orientation, qualify for state provided veterans services. It also requires the California Department of Veterans Services to provide Internet resources, Internet links, and print materials regarding veterans legal services organizations that specialize in military discharge upgrades.

As a general rule, veterans separated from the military with a discharge that is characterized as dishonorable, or other than honorable, are ineligible to receive state or federal veterans benefits.

When service members were being discharged simply because of their sexual orientation, it was up to their commanding officers to decide whether the discharge should be honorable or dishonorable.

Sadly, out of blind homophobia, those commanding officers some times arbitrarily decided to choose the dishonorable designation. That made thousands of military service members, who had served our nation with honor, ineligible for the state and federal veterans benefits that all other veterans receive.

AB 1505 begins to redress this injustice by providing these unjustly discharged veterans with resources to seek a change in their discharge to honorable. Then it makes sure that, once those discharges are upgraded, these veterans will get the state veterans benefits they deserve.

AB 1505 is good legislation. Please vote for it.

Sincerely,
