Dear Senator,
I urge you to vote for AB 401 when it comes before you in the Senate Education Committee on May 16.
The purpose of this bill is to remove offensive language from the California Education Code which seems to relate sexual orientation and pedophilia or child molesting.
The following language is found in the Education Code: "Sexual orientation shall not include pedophilia".
Frankly, I find that language offensive. One could conclude from that wording that sexual orientation may not include pedophilia in this situation, but that it might reasonably do so in other situations.
Sexual orientation, and being gay or lesbian in particular, has nothing to do with pedophilia in any situation. But, the mere fact that those concepts are included together in the Education Code lends itself to continuing the stereotypical view that they are related.
The above quoted offensive language should be removed from the Education Code. AB 401 would do that and so I urge you to vote for it.
