Subject: Support SB 1053 Another Bill To Cut Text Book Costs
Dear Assembly Member,
I urge you to vote for SB 1053 when it comes before you in the Assembly Higher Education Committee on July 3.
SB 1053 would establish the California Digital Open Source Library to house open source
materials while providing an Internet Web-based way for students, faculty, and staff to easily find, adopt, utilize, or modify text books and other course materials for little or no cost
This could greatly reduce the cost of going to college. Instead of having to buy expensive text books for each class, students could access the same, or similar, information on the Internet for little or no cost.
It is not uncommon for the text book, for just one class, to cost $200. Assuming a student takes 5 classes per semester, the cost of text books alone, for just one year of college, could be as much as $2,000. That is on top of tuition, housing, food etc.
The University of California web site says it currently costs students between $28,400 and $31,200 per year to attend UC, depending on whether they live on or off campus. Attendance at the California State University now costs between $16,000 and $22,000 per year. These costs are making it impossible for huge numbers of Californians to attend college.
This nation is one of the most inventive, and innovative nations in history. And that has been at the core of why we have become the largest economy in the world. But all that innovation has occurred because of this nation's long standing commitment to affordable college education.
What they learned in college provided many innovative Americans the basic knowledge that made it possible for them to go on and make ground breaking discoveries that have made this nation the economic power house that it is. If they had not been able to afford college, we might have lost their innovations which are contributing so much to the future of our state and nation.
The high cost of attending college might prevent the potential inventor of a cure for cancer from getting the education needed to be able to discover that cure.
SB 1053 can greatly reduce the cost of attending college. Please vote for it.
