Subject: Support SB 1140 Same Sex Marriage

Dear Senator,

I urge you to vote for SB 1140 when it comes before you in the Senate Judiciary Committee on May 1.

SB 1140 says that no member of the clergy is required to solemnize a wedding that violates his or her religious beliefs.

It also says no religious institution will lose its tax exempt status for refusing to sanction marriages that violate the religious beliefs of that institution.

There certainly has been a lot of vigorous debate over whether or not same sex couples should be allowed to marry. One of the concerns that has been raised by those who oppose same sex marriage is the fear that, if same sex marriage became legal, clergy members and religious institutions might be required to condone, and solemnize, such marriages, even if to do so violates their religious beliefs.

I believe that same sex couples should be allowed to marry. However, I understand that some people might disagree with me.

I think it is entirely reasonable that clergy and religious bodies who disagree with me should not be forced to solemnize and support same sex marriage.

There has been way too much heated argument over this issue. Where possible, we should agree to measures that will help to end those arguments.

SB 1140 should help to take one of the reasons for opposing same sex marriage off the table. That is a good thing. So I hope you will vote for SB 1140 in the Senate Judiciary Committee.

Sincerely,
