Subject: Support SB 1172 Protect LGBT Children

Dear Assembly Member,

I urge you to vote for SB 1172 when it comes before you in the Assembly.

This bill would make it unlawful for mental health providers to perform sexual orientation change treatment on children under the age of 18, regardless of the child's willingness to have it, and regardless of anyone else requesting it for the child.

Why should you vote for this bill?

First of all, an individual's sexual orientation, whether homosexual, bisexual, or heterosexual, is not a disease. All the reputable mental health professional's organizations acknowledge this fact. There is no need to try to change someone's sexual orientation.

Second, there is considerable evidence that such treatment can actually cause sometimes serious mental health problems, especially among children. These problems can include; confusion, depression, guilt, helplessness, hopelessness, shame, social withdrawal, suicidality, and substance abuse.

Third, these treatments, when paid for by the parents of LGBT children, are a waste of money since they are un-needed and can harm the children. Unsuspecting parents should be protected from what amounts to economic fraud perpetrated by therapists.

Perfectly healthy lesbian, gay, and bisexual children are already under severe pressure from their peers and others. We should not add to their burdens by subjecting them to un-needed sexual orientation change therapy.

Please protect them from the harm that such therapy can do. Please vote for SB 1172.

Sincerely,
