Please vote for SB 1234 when it comes before you in the Assembly PERS Committee on July 3.
This bill would set up a retirement plan that would benefit workers of private businesses that do not offer a retirement plan to their employees.
Here is how it would work. Each pay day employers would deduct 3% from the wages of each employee. That money would then be sent to a new state program established by this legislation. That program would pool all the funds it receives and invest them to build its value over the years.
Then, when each enrolled worker reaches retirement age, he or she would get a monthly check from the program to supplement any other retirement payments available to the retired person.
Each employee would automatically be enrolled in the program. However, any employee could opt out of it if he or she wished to do so.
The problem, according to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, is that only 64% of employees in private industry have access to employer provided retirement programs. And only 49% of them actually participate in such programs.
For many, Social Security will be the only income they will have during their retirement years. And for many of them, that will leave them in poverty.
In fact, according to recent data from the University of California, even middle class families in California are at significant risk of not having enough retirement income to meet even basic expenses. Nearly 50 percent of middle-income California workers will retire at or near poverty.
The program offered by SB 1234 will do much to deal with this looming problem. It is good legislation. Please vote for SB 1234 in the Assembly PERS Committee.
