Dear Senator,
I urge you to vote for SB 1345 when it comes before you in the Senate Appropriations Committee on May 7.
This bill says that "to the extent that funds are available" the Commission On The Status Of Women shall study a set of issues that I will list later in this letter.
First, let me state emphatically that the study of these issues is essential to the well being of women in California. Therefore, I strongly urge you to vote for this bill in the Senate Appropriations Committee, and again on the Senate floor.
Second, I implore you to fight for continued funding for the Commission, and ask that you urge all your colleagues to do the same.
Here is the list of issues the Commission should study:
- The educational needs of women and girls.
- Women's economic opportunities and employment rights.
- Needs of working women, including, but not limited to, leave,
child care, and pay equity.
- The effect that the state budget has on women and children.
- Violence against women, including, but not limited to, human
trafficking.
- Other issues which the Legislature may recommend
These are issue of the utmost importance to women. It is no secret that women earn less than men.
Women still find it difficult to enter some occupations. And those who do gain employment in those fields, often face barriers to advancement that are not there for men.
Then, too, women in single parent households must deal with the challenges of finding affordable child care.
Women face a continuing epidemic of domestic abuse. Human trafficking continues to be a serious problem for women, particularly immigrant women.
All of our state agencies should be responding to any or all of these issues. Often they have programs which, if properly designed, could help women with one of more of these challenges.
The Commission on the Status of Women can do the essential work of defining the issues for those agencies, and advising them on how best they can tailor their programs to help women deal with the challenges they face.
For all these reasons, I urge you to vote for SB 1345 in committee and then to become strong advocates for the funding the work of the Commission.
