Dear Senator,
I urge you to vote for SB 1476 when it comes before you in the Senate Appropriations Committee on May 21.
This bill would allow courts to recognize the parental rights of more that two adults, when that is in the best interest of the child.
This legislation has become necessary because of a state appeals court decision in 2011, which said only two adults can be recognized as having parental rights regarding a particular child.
This decision came in the case of a child being raised by two women. One of the women ended up in the hospital, and the other ended up in jail. The biological father of the child was ready, willing, and able to take care of the child. His two mothers also were happy to have him take over parental care of the child until they could resume doing that. No one, questioned the capability of the father to adequately care for the child. And the child knew and loved her father.
But the appeals court said only two people can be recognized as parents of the child and the two women were the recognized parents in this case. So the court put the child in state custody.
This child was ripped from the only home she knew, and from the father that she knew and loved. Instead she was put into an alien environment with strangers whom she did not know. Surely, this was not in the best interests of this child.
You can prevent this from happening again by voting for SB 1476. I urge you, in the strongest terms to do just that.
Sincerely,
