Dear Assembly Member,
I urge you to vote for SB 628 when it comes before you in the Assembly Business and Professions Committee on June 12.
This bill would make it illegal for anyone who is practicing acupuncture
1. To use the title of Dr. or Doctor unless he or she holds a degree that is approved by the state for the use of that title.
2. To use the title "Doctor" or "Dr." without indicating the type of license or certificate that entitles him or her to use that title. In other words, someone with a PhD. in sociology would have to declare that his or her degree is not in the field of acupuncture.
Initially, many Americans were leery of acupuncture. But more and more it seems to be becoming a fad. More and more people want to try it.
The problem with that is that it attracts charlatans to the field, people who are not really qualified to perform the procedure. This can certainly be harmful to the patient. He or she could suffer significant harm at the hands of an unqualified practitioner.
It can also do harm to both practitioners and the patients who need there help. If the news media find and broadcast news of patients harmed, that will cause people who could really be helped by acupuncture to refuse to accept it. Legitimate practitioners would lose business, and people needing their care would not get it.
All in all, the public, and legitimate acupuncturists, will be best served if the practice is professionalized in the way that SB 628 would do it.
SB 628 is good legislation. Please vote for it.
