Dear City Councilmember,
Our community has worked for nearly 2 years to support a Tobacco Free Providence. Big Tobacco is fighting back.
Please stand strong with us and help defend these vital new protections for our kids, keeping them safe from flavored tobacco and pricing schemes.
Flavored tobacco products are specifically designed to attract new, young smokers. Tobacco companies sell candy-flavored tobacco products - such as cigars and cigarillos - which mask the taste of tobacco with flavors that appeal to kids, like strawberry, peach, blueberry and grape. Flavored tobacco products are just as addictive as regular tobacco products. Scientists have found that many kids think flavored tobacco products are safer than regular tobacco products. This is not true. All tobacco products contain nicotine and are addictive.
Regarding pricing schemes, children are 3 times more sensitive to tobacco advertising- like 2 for 1 specials- than adults. And tobacco companies' advertising and marketing is powerful- children in Rhode Island buy or smoke more than 2 million packs of cigarettes each year.
