Subject: RPS 205 Academies

Dear School Board Member:

As a business leader in the Rockford Region, I support the implementation of Academies in Rockford's high schools. This model is a highly-researched reform model which supports college and career readiness.

Key academy characteristics have been shown to increase student college and career readiness:
Smaller learning communities
Opportunity for all students to take college- and career-preparatory curriculum
Sustaining support of business, civic, post-secondary and cultural organizations, which is a significant tool for student interaction with the community

As a community business leader I know that positive social and economic development require systematic integration between organizations. Employer expectations are rising, and as a result, educational expectations must rise in sync. Academies present an opportunity for area businesses and high schools to integrate work-based experiences so teachers and students are enabled and motivated to perform at higher levels. Rockford Public Schools is poised to implement a very progressive, practical high school redesign approach by linking education closely to economic development.

I urge you to support the implementation of academies. We may be willing to partner with you by providing:

Work-based learning experiences for teachers and/or students
Career exploration opportunities
Job-shadowing
Site visits
Speakers
Industry leadership support
Academy support
