Your Personal Statement
I am sending this email to urge you to support passage of the City Council of Hartford's resolution, raised by Councilperson Segarra, supporting the State Legislator's Bill SB-1044 An Act Concerning Discrimination (Trans Anti-Discrimination bill).
This bill has already been favorably (and near unanimously) passed out of both the Judiciary and Government Affairs and Elections committee's and passage of this City Resolution will help secure its passage in both the Senate and the House of the Connecticut General Assembly.
SB 1044 clarifies and updates Connecticut's non-discrimination laws to ensure that they clearly and uniformly protect all people regardless of their gender identity or expression by simply adding the phrase "gender identity and expression", as defined in Connecticut's "Hate Crime law", to all statutes that address discrimination.
From both a priori and empirical studies it is well known that Transgender people experience widespread discrimination in Hartford and Connecticut at large. Your support of this bill is vital and is needed to protect transgender and gender non-conforming individuals from being fired, denied basic housing, denied credit and most basic services.
Currently, a number of major Connecticut Corporations, including Hartford based Aetna, (e.g. Aetna, IBM, Pfizer, ESPN, Chubb) as well as small businesses have explicit policies prohibiting discrimination based on ones gender identity and expression as well as employing Transgender individuals.
I encourage you to support this resolution; Senate Bill 1044 is not about Special Rights; it is about basic Human Rights for those living not only in Hartford but in all of Connecticut!
