Subject: Use Your Voice to End the War
I am writing to urge you to support S-100 and H5195 / H5222 / H5340 which all express opposition to the escalation in the Iraq War and urge a redeployment of US troops.
Please do not sweep this issue under the rug and pretend like it doesn't exist.
On the contrary, this issue is perhaps the defining political issue of the day and here are just a few reasons why it makes sense for the General Assembly to use its collective voice:
* Rhode Island has lost nearly $1.7 billion in taxdollars to this war. The close-to $500 billion that has been appropriated by Congress to fund military operations and reconstruction in Iraq to date - is desperately needed for education, health care, housing, nutrition and other social services in Rhode Island. (http://www.costofwar.com)
* Both Sen. Reed and Sen. Whitehouse encouraged the General Assembly to make their voice heard on this subject. (Charlie Bakst Providence Journal 3/13/07)
* The continued escalation and deployment of National Guard tours in Iraq puts a terrible economic and emotional strain on Rhode Island military families including: lost lives, combat injuries and psychic trauma, disruption of family life, financial hardship for individuals, families and businesses and interruption of careers
* Over 75% of Rhode Islanders have joined with the Iraq Study Group, leading military and diplomatic officials and allies around the world in calling for a reduction in troops and the
withdrawal of the US from Iraq
* Many, many other states have passed anti-escalation and anti-war resolutions including our New England neighbors Connecticut, Massachusetts and Vermont.
It is well-known at this point that political and diplomatic solutions are the tools to victory in Iraq; not military solutions. As an elected official, you have a responsibility to use your voice to bring an end to this war and to bring our Rhode Island troops home.
