Subject: Keep Bicentennial Park Green
A letter to City Commissioners:
We urge you to delay decisions for funding the three museums in Bicentennial Park from Homeland Security Bond Funds until greater oversight is provided for the matching money demanded by the city and county. We are concerned that the procedures are inadequate to assure proper tracking of the matching funds in a timely fashion. WE DO NOT WANT TO SEE ANOTHER PAC FIASCO occur in Miami. Now is the time to stop and reassess the procedures for compliance. Your vigilance in this process is imperative. We are not against museums, but we are for museums that do not take prime waterfront parkland for non park purposes. The MAM architect could well be planning a museum that has a budget far in excess of earlier projections- as much as $1,000 a square foot. In most other cities, museums are largely paid for by private donors. Miami has a number of other museums largely paid for from private funds. MAM has a small collection of art and does not warrant such a large amount of public funds.
We do not believe that Miami-Dade taxpayers should foot the bill for $275 million plus millions in additional costs, plus the cost of the land which is alleged to be worth up to $100 million. We need more parkland and places for ALL OUR PEOPLE. Further, we believe that comprehensive planning for our waterfront needs far greater attention than has taken place up to now. The city's record on waterfront planning has been largely inadequate. Please consider creating a Waterfront Planning Commission with clout as well as comprehensive principles for waterfront development, reactivating the city's Parks Advisory Board and delaying the Cooper Robertson plan for Bicentennial Park until more comprehensive planning has been completed. This is the last open space on
our waterfront and we are concerned that the Cooper Robertson Plan is a hot park with a host of event spaces and museums largely for the rich and not enough human scale spaces for everyday folks. Consider using some of the funds for neighborhood needs, including high quality community centers. On May 10 when conceding the resolution for the bond money please pay head to the people's needs and wishes.
