Subject: Living Wage Jobs & Worker Rights
Your Personal Statement
Real, sustainable community economic development strengthens the economy from the inside out, with a focus on raising incomes for existing residents, respecting the dignity of employees and nurturing local businesses. The tens of millions of dollars of public financing (e.g. TIFs) can be a powerful tool for economic empowerment, if city officials and developers agree to use them for that purpose.
Any company/institution/developer (with more than 10 employees) should be required to negotiate a community benefits agreement as a condition for receiving TIF or other public funds, including a commitment to ensuring that:
* there is a mechanism for giving local residents first chance to apply for jobs
* all employees and contractors' employees get a Living Wage
* worker rights are respected, including safety standards and the right to organize without interference.
I ask you to include these types of conditions in TIF redevelopment agreements (e.g. with Loyola U.)
Thank you.
