I want to thank Bay Area Prabasi and the NABC planning committee for including Prof. Raka Ray's session on LGBT Bengali identity on July 4 at the upcoming 2009 North American Bengali Conference.
Because of bias, LGBT Bengalis, their families, friends, and allies often find it difficult to be open inside the community, leading some community members to mistakenly believe that they don't exist. Your decision to feature LGBT speakers is in the best tradition of Bengal's long history of social justice movements, and is a tiny step toward the day when no Bengali will have to hide the ones they love.
I've been telling all my Bengali friends about NABC 2009, and your amazing lineup of artists and speakers. Good luck with the conference!
