Subject: Drop Irresponsible Contractor now!
I am outraged to learn that DART First State may be using a tax scofflaw to clean its facilities in New Castle County, and the same company is a janitorial subcontractor at the Public Safety Building in downtown Wilmington.
Elite Building Services has a history of unpaid federal taxes. It has more than $240,000 in outstanding federal tax liens. And the company has been accused by current and former employees of turning a deaf ear to workers when they complain about working conditions.
A former employee had to rely on charity care from a hospital van while working for Elite. A current worker was transferred to a different worksite after she complained about late paychecks. Elite’s treatment of its workers is not consistent with the conduct of a responsible contractor.
As public agencies funded mostly by taxpayer dollars, DART and Wilmington should not use tax delinquents that do not respect its workers. I urge you not to renew contracts with Elite or property managers that employ Elite, and to seek a low bidder that is also responsible.
