Dear Mr. Hinsberger,
We want to bring to your attention that yet another tenant is being wrongfully evicted from Northpoint/Aimco. Carol Vialadores has lived in Northpoint for 16 years. She is raising four children there, all who attend the community public school, Gale--her daughter graduating this year and planning to attend college in the fall.
The allegation against her is that she had a verbal dispute with a property manager, and that this person felt threatened. Not only was there no criminal charge filed, but there is a witness who will testify that there was no such threat. Instead, it seems more likely that this is part of a pattern of evictions (and threats of evictions and rent refusal) based on work orders made by tenants. In fact Carol's conversation with this manager began with a discussion over work orders that Northpoint had ignored. It also seems likely that management’s refusal to negotiate with Carol, (evidently ignoring their own lawyer’s suggestion), is retaliation for Carol helping to organize her fellow tenants into a Northpoint Tenants’ Association.
You did the right thing before by intervening when Northpoint attempted to evict Erica Bledsoe and her family. We believe you heard us when we said that HUD does not exist, directly or indirectly, to wrongfully evict low-income families who will then face a housing crisis of foreclosure, (one filed every 20 minutes), and eviction, (3,000 pending in Cook County), with no prospect of future housing subsidy.
Please contact Aimco/Northpoint and demand that they stop this eviction. We know that Northpoint has the daily responsibility for this property, but you and HUD are ultimately accountable to these tenants and their right to housing. Carol and her children are going to trial May 6th. There is time for you to make a real difference, and that time is now. We also ask that HUD and IHDA investigate AIMCO, as we know that they our spending the tenant's money and our tax dollars to displace poor families.
