Subject: FY2011 Funding for the Tucson Pima Arts Council
Dear Mayor and Councilmembers,
I am writing you in support of the proposal FY 2011 allocation for the Tucson Pima Arts Council. The budgeted amount of $442,000 is an investment in the creative economy of Tucson and southern Arizona; these public dollars bring a return on investment that is many-fold.
Beyond their intrinsic value, arts play an instrumental role in the community: Arts and culture industry drives a creativity-based economy. Each year, TPAC directly funds 50-60 arts groups, which are part of a regional cultural industry that has an annual economic impact of $57 million. The arts earn tax revenue for local and state government, attract tourists and new tourism dollars; and contributes to the attractiveness of the area for other industries. Tucson's arts and culture industry also provides nearly 900 jobs for the region.
Arts & cultural organizations enhance quality of life and make Tucson a livable city, by preserving our cultural heritage, by supporting ethnic diversity, and by helping residents to find expression, meaning, and pursue lifelong learning.
We need to maintain arts and culture industry infrastructure to have a healthy community; I ask you to vote to maintain the funding at the budgeted level.
