Subject: Keep the College of Alameda childcare center open!

Your Personal Statement

I believe accessible, affordable child care is fundamental to public education and that the College of Alameda childcare center must stay open at full capacity. There is no good reason to shut down the College of Alameda childcare center.

The Peralta Board and administration are trying to balance their mismanaged budget on the backs of working class moms who depend on child care to get an education at Peralta. The closure is especially egregious because the District has presented no legitimate reason for doing so.

The District says there is no money, but the Peralta Children's Center Fund had $1.19 million in reserves at the end of 2008-09 - enough to keep COA open for at least two years. Contrary to District misinformation, the COA center has run under-budget and has met its contract with the State in recent years while the Sheriff's department, for example, went $1 million over-budget last year.

The District says people are not asking for child care, but in truth there are over forty families on the wait-list for COA.

The District wants to consolidate Peralta's childcare centers, but the Laney and Merritt centers are full, many current COA mothers cannot commute, and all the COA staff are being laid off. These workers who have built personal bonds with the kids - where will they go?

The District has not presented a good reason for the closure of the center because such a reason does not exist.

OUR DEMANDS:
1. We demand that the College of Alameda childcare center stay open at full capacity.

2. We demand that the Peralta Board of Trustees immediately agendize the COA childcare issue to give parents, students and the public the right to make decisions about our education. At the April 27 Board meeting, Chair Abel Guillen promised to put COA child care on the May 11 Board meeting agenda. Child care is not on the agenda on May 11, but an additional 18.5 layoffs of classified staff are. Nothing about us without us!

3. We demand that the Peralta administration rescind the $500,000+ in illegal pay raises they gave themselves last year and cut their own salaries until child care is no longer in jeopardy. Chop the top!
