Subject: Thank you for NOT hearing H8142

Dear Speaker Gordon D. Fox,

Thank you for not allowing a hearing on House Bill 8142, which would have needlessly exacerbated the climate of hatred toward the immigrant community that already exists. And thank you for standing up to groups like RIILE and the Tea Party that have been instrumental in promulgating this climate of hatred.

Representative Palumbo introduced this legislation with mean-spirited and divisive intentions. Nationally, there is much agreement that federal comprehensive immigration reform is the appropriate means to address this issue.

As you know, the language contained within the bill would allow police to question any individual that they deem as "reasonably [suspicious]" about his or her citizenship. The nature of the language specifically used within this bill was extremely ambiguous and would have inevitably resulted in the use of racial profiling.

I hope that in the future you will do what is best for Rhode Island by continuing to stand against this legislation and any similar bills that may be introduced. We want to maintain Rhode Island's reputation as being a great place to live, work, and raise a family. And in the spirit of Roger Williams, we must preserve our tradition of maintaining a society that is tolerant of all.
