Dear Mrs. Gorky:
Please accept this letter of community support for Mr. Richard Meagher and his application for the position of Principal of the Northbridge Middle School. As essential community stake holders in the success of our schools (parents, former students, citizens, tax payers and voters) we believe that it is important to communicate our confidence in, and endorsement of, Mr. Meagher.
Over the course of the last nine years our community has been the beneficiary of Mr. Meagher’s commitment to our town and the needs of its children. We have experienced him as a leader within the schools who has been consistently accessible. He is reliably willing to work with us in attaining the best interests of all students and developing a culture in which our schools are an active part of our community. On this last point, Mr. Meagher has been frequently engaged with students, families and other community members both during and outside of regular school hours.
Like many administrators Mr. Meagher is not from Northbridge. Like many administrators, he came into the Northbridge schools with strong academic and work credentials, but with little knowledge of our community’s assets and challenges. Over the last nine years he has clearly demonstrated a deep appreciation for our community and established strong working relationships with the community in general. For many families Mr. Meagher is the contact who is willing to take extra time to talk through an issue or work with a student for whom school is simply more difficult for any of a number of reasons. He does not give up on students who are challenging, and constantly looks for each student’s hidden strengths and motivation. It is in recognition of his abilities and value to the district that we offer you this letter.
As we look to our schools future [(i) creating the best possible educational and cultural climate at the middle school, (ii) maximizing our town’s financial investment during the coming economic challenges, (iii) building community support for our schools needed to secure sufficient budgetary support] we endorse Mr. Meagher as middle school principal. With the sad announcement that Jill Carroll would return to the position of vice principal it appears clear that our district will be either budgeting a second vice principal at NMS or moving one of these proven administrators to another school. The cost associated with adding additional administrators appears unreasonable given the pending budgetary conditions. Moving either Ms. Carroll or Mr. Meagher to another school (or losing them to another district) would be equally unacceptable alternatives. The middle school, our largest school, has an existing opportunity to level fund and maintain its proven administrative team. We both recommend Mr. Meagher as the next principal at NMS and, given that he is already serving within that school, request that he be advanced to finalist status.
