Subject: Don't cut the school budget
To the Council:
As a supporter of education in Portsmouth, I am troubled by the Council's recent action to tentatively level fund the school budget, an effective cut of $1.2 million from what was requested. The School Committee and administration proposed a lean, sensible budget with just a 2.5% increase, and they had to make tough choices to do it -- closing Elmhurst, cutting staff, and not funding materials, IT, or the libraries at levels recommended by the performance audit.
I understand that the Town is in a difficult position, given the loss of state aid. But I urge you to reconsider this hasty and drastic action, which would threaten many of the extracurricular programs like sports and music that make our schools a vibrant community and promote successful, well-rounded students.
Please do not sacrifice our children's education to an arbitrary budget reduction. Thanks very much for your attention to this issue.
Best Regards.
