I am writing to urge you to oppose anti-immigrant budget amendments that were recently passed by the Senate. These amendments are misguided, inhumane and harmful – to workers and employers.
Below are three examples that demonstrate why these provisions are wrong-headed and mean-spirited:
Extension of E-Verify Requirement.
Employers are already required to document citizenship or immigration status. Experience in Arizona suggests mandatory E-Verify will drive workers and business into the underground economy, resulting in a loss of tax revenue to the state.
AG MOU with U.S. Attorney General
Requiring the Attorney General to establish a 24-hour hotline for reporting suspected immigration violations under state law will result in a witch hunt. Furthermore, requiring the Attorney General to refer violations to the U.S. Attorney General will deter workers from bringing complaints against employers who violate wage and hour laws.
Additional Verification of Eligibility for Unemployment
Requiring DUA to maintain additional paper records would would be onerous for citizens at a time when so many are unemployed, and would add substantial staffing and storage costs to an agency already swamped by a recession-driven increase in UI application.
This is not the kind of society we want in Massachusetts. Massachusetts is NOT Arizona. Please do everything in your power to put a halt to these budget amendments.
